Swimming Tampere offers a special swimming group for young people and adults with intellectual disabilities


Swimming practices started in autumn 2021 and the group is intended for young people and adults with intellectual disabilities. The aim is to create a pleasant team spirit, practise social skills and develop as swimmers, always taking into account each swimmer’s individual needs, from basic training all the way to competitions. Swimming is both a Summer Paralympic sport and a Special Olympics sport, and swimmers in the group can take part in the activities of both organisations. The swimming requirement for the group is at least 15 m (large pool). The group practises on Sundays at Hervanta Swimming Hall and the coaches in charge are Teemu Kontkanen and Jussi Toivola.

What does the group do?

  • Practises different swimming techniques from the basics to more advanced exercises.
  • Activities are based on doing things together and respecting one another.
  • The swimming hobby is goal-oriented, according to each swimmer’s own goals.

Requirements:

  • The swimmer must be able to swim 15 metres.
  • The swimmer must be able to manage independently in the changing and shower facilities, or have an assistant with them.
  • The swimmer must be able to communicate verbally or with the help of an assistant.

Participation:

  • Family members and close relatives of the swimmers are welcome to join the activities.
  • The aim is to keep costs as low as possible.

Where and when?

  • Swimming practices take place at Hervanta Swimming Hall on Sundays.
  • In the pool from 11:00 to 12:00.

Costs:

  • Swimming entrance fee
  • Club membership fee (Uita)
  • Licence, if wishing to compete
  • It is possible to come and try the swimming sessions several times before paying the membership fee or licence.
